Monthly Grocery and Food Budget for One Person

A monthly food budget for one person has two official answers: what USDA prices for a nutritious diet cooked at home, and what one-person households told BLS they spent. This page covers one adult. For other household sizes, see the average grocery bill by family size page.

Quick answer

USDA's September 2026 Thrifty Food Plan is $253.90 a month for a woman ages 20-50 and $319.00 for a man ages 20-50, before the one-person adjustment. USDA says to add 20 percent for a one-person household, which is about $305 and about $383. BLS reported that one-person households spent about $283 a month on groceries in 2024, and about $470 a month on all food including eating out.

How much should one person budget for food?

Start with the plan that matches how you eat. USDA prices food prepared at home. The September 2026 reports list a cost for each age and sex as if that person lived in a four-person household, then say to add 20 percent for a one-person household.

For a woman 20-50, Thrifty is $253.90 × 1.20, about $305. For a man 20-50, Thrifty is $319.00 × 1.20, about $383. Low-Cost, Moderate-Cost, and Liberal use the 19-50 rows: $276.30 and $317.70, $336.40 and $398.40, and $429.60 and $486.80 before that 20 percent.

What a frugal grocery budget means

A frugal grocery budget, in the USDA sense, is the Thrifty Food Plan: a nutritious, practical diet with every meal and snack prepared at home. For one adult in September 2026 that is about $305 to $383 a month after the one-person adjustment, depending on sex. It is not a challenge to eat for as little as possible.

BLS one-person households spent less than that on groceries in 2024, about $283 a month, and more once food away from home is included. Spending under the Thrifty grocery number often means some meals are eaten out, not that the Thrifty cart got cheaper.

For two adults, a family of four, and other household sizes, see the average grocery bill by family size page.

Is $300 a month enough for one person?

Three hundred dollars is just under the September 2026 one-person Thrifty estimate for a woman ages 20-50 (about $305) and below the estimate for a man (about $383). It can match a tight grocery cart, especially if some meals are eaten away from home. It is below USDA's at-home benchmark for either adult.

The 2024 BLS average for one-person groceries was about $283 a month. That survey number and the USDA plan are different measures. Neither one is a promise that your store will ring up $300.

What the 5-4-3-2-1 grocery rule is

The 5-4-3-2-1 rule is a shopping template, not a USDA budget. Allrecipes describes the version popularized by chef Will Coleman: buy five vegetables, four fruits, three proteins, two sauces or spreads, and one grain, plus a treat and the pantry staples you already use. Other write-ups swap the groups. It limits the cart. It does not set a dollar budget and it does not replace the Food Plans.

Methodology

Thrifty monthly costs for adults ages 20-50 are the September 2026 published figures: $253.90 for a woman and $319.00 for a man. USDA says those costs are for individuals in four-person households and that a one-person household should add 20 percent. About $305 and about $383 are those products, rounded to the nearest dollar.

Low-Cost, Moderate-Cost, and Liberal figures use the September 2026 rows for women and men ages 19-50: $276.30 and $317.70, $336.40 and $398.40, and $429.60 and $486.80. The same 20 percent adjustment, rounded to the nearest dollar, is about $332 and $381, $404 and $478, and $516 and $584. USDA rounds its own published costs to the nearest 10 cents and calculates a month as weekly cost times 4.333.

USDA states that the Food Plans assume all meals and snacks are prepared at home.

BLS figures are from the 2024 Consumer Expenditure Surveys, Table 1400. One-person food at home was $3,395 a year, about $283 a month. All food was $5,644 a year, about $470 a month. Monthly figures divide the published annual means by 12 and round to the nearest dollar.
