ChatGPT meal plan prompts that give you a usable week

Vague prompts get vague dinners. Each prompt below names who you're feeding, how much time you have and what to avoid, and asks for shared ingredients so the grocery list stays short. Use the “Open in ChatGPT” link to start with the prompt already typed.

Meal plan prompts for a normal family week

These work in plain ChatGPT. The details in brackets do most of the work, so fill them in before you send.

  1. Five weeknight dinners

Plan 5 weeknight dinners for [number] people. Two nights need to be ready in 25 minutes or less. We don't eat [foods]. Reuse at least 3 ingredients across the week so nothing goes to waste, and give me one grocery list grouped by store section.

Asking for shared ingredients is what keeps the list short.

  2. Picky eaters

Plan 5 dinners my family will actually eat. My kids are [ages] and like [safe foods]. Each dinner should have a plain version for the kids and a more seasoned version for the adults from the same pan. Include a grocery list.

One base meal with two finishes beats cooking twice.

  3. Budget week

Plan 7 dinners for a family of [number] on about $[amount] for the week. Use cheap staples like rice, beans, eggs, chicken thighs and frozen vegetables, repeat ingredients on purpose, and list leftovers I can use for lunches.

Prices are estimates. Check your store before you shop.

  4. 3-day meal prep

Design a 3-day meal prep plan with healthy, budget-friendly lunches. Use no more than 12 ingredients, tell me what to cook on Sunday, and create a grocery list organized by shopping aisle.

Capping the ingredient count keeps prep to one session.

  5. Use what's in the fridge

I have [list what's in your fridge and pantry]. Plan 4 dinners that use these up first, tell me which ingredient to use by which night, and list only the few things I still need to buy.

Lead with what goes bad first: greens, herbs, dairy.

Where plain ChatGPT runs out

A good prompt gets you a good week once. Next Sunday you start over: the household rules, the dinners your kids rejected, the list. SummitPlate keeps all of that in your account and plans around it, and the SummitPlate app in ChatGPT lets you change meals and check the list without leaving the chat.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT make a meal plan with a grocery list?

Yes. Ask for the number of dinners, who you're feeding, the time you have and the foods you avoid, and ask for one grocery list grouped by store section. The prompts on this page are written that way.

Why does ChatGPT's grocery list come out wrong?

ChatGPT writes the list from the recipes in the chat, so it can double-count ingredients, miss pantry staples or round quantities oddly. Check quantities before you shop. SummitPlate builds its list from the planned recipes and combines shared ingredients.

Does ChatGPT remember my family's food rules next week?

Only if they stay in that chat or in ChatGPT memory, and even then it can drift. SummitPlate keeps your household's preferences, allergies and plans in your account, and the SummitPlate app in ChatGPT reads them from there.

Do the SummitPlate prompts work without an account?

No. Those prompts need SummitPlate added to ChatGPT and a SummitPlate account connected. The family-week prompts work in plain ChatGPT.
