Budget dinners for a large family, including a family of six

A large-family dinner has to fill six plates without a new meat every night. This page is that bigger pot. Cooking for five? The family-of-five budget meal plan is linked below.

Six people need a bigger base, not six different recipes.

Quick answer

The short answer

For six people, lead with rice or potatoes, beans, eggs, cabbage, and one meat that appears twice. Chili, a rice bake, baked potatoes, fried rice, and burritos are the usual shapes because they scale in one pot. A realistic all-food-at-home budget is a USDA question, not a dinner-menu question. For one example family of five in September 2026, the Thrifty Food Plan math is about $1,152 a month after USDA's 5-person adjustment. The $50-a-week meal plan is written for four people, so it will run short for six.

  • Scale the starch and beans before the meat

Concrete plan

Five budget dinners for a family of six

These are written for six plates. The dollar notes are approximate planning estimates for the dinner ingredients, not a monthly food budget.

Monday

Turkey and bean chili over rice

Two pounds of turkey plus beans and diced carrots feeds six and leaves chili. Planning estimate: about $14.

Tuesday

Chicken rice bake with frozen vegetables

Three pounds of thighs stretched with rice. Cook extra plain rice and hold back a third of the chicken for Thursday. Planning estimate: about $13.

Wednesday

Baked potatoes with the rest of the chili

Same chili, different plate. Potatoes are the new grocery. Planning estimate: about $5.

Thursday

Egg fried rice with leftover chicken

A dozen eggs and Tuesday's rice. Planning estimate: about $6.

Friday

Bean and cheese burritos with cabbage

No new meat. Planning estimate: about $8.

Decision framework

What to cook when the table is full

Pick meals that get cheaper per plate as you add another scoop of rice or beans.

Family of six

Chili, rice bakes, baked potatoes, fried rice, and burritos. One pot, six plates.

Set the household size to six and ask for pot meals, not plated restaurant copies.

Family of five budget

Use USDA for the monthly food number. Use the family-of-five page for that dinner pattern.

Set the household size to five for a menu sized for five.

Meat is the spike

Add beans and rice before you add a third package of meat.

Ask the planner to stretch one meat across two dinners.

What makes this page different from another recipe list

Family of five

A realistic food budget is the USDA plan, not this menu

USDA's September 2026 Thrifty costs for people in a 4-person household are $253.90 for a woman 20-50, $319.00 for a man 20-50, $188.30 for a child 4-5, $209.10 for a child 6-8, and $241.90 for a child 9-11. That example sums to $1,212.20. USDA says to subtract 5 percent for a 5- or 6-person household: $1,212.20 × 0.95 = $1,151.59, about $1,152. Those figures assume every meal and snack is prepared at home. BLS reported about $856 a month on groceries for households of five or more in 2024. That is a survey average of what those households bought, and they also ate some meals out, which is one reason it sits below the USDA all-meals figure. The dinner list on this page is a separate planning estimate.

  • - Example family, not every family of five
  • - All meals at home for the USDA number
  • - BLS groceries and USDA plans measure different things

Family of six

Meals that survive a full table

Make the pot bigger, not the recipe list. Chili over rice, a chicken rice bake, potatoes topped with the leftover chili, egg fried rice, and bean burritos share the same onions, spices, rice, and beans.

  • - One pot
  • - A planned leftover night
  • - Beans in at least two dinners

Smaller households

Cooking for four or five?

The family-of-five budget meal plan has a menu sized for five. The $50-a-week meal plan is written for four. This page starts at six plates and uses a family of five only for the USDA budget example.

  • - Scale the rice and beans, not the meat
  • - Keep the planned leftover night
  • - Add a dinner, not a new recipe

Sources

Where the numbers come from

Last reviewed 2026-10-23. Dollar amounts on this page are planning estimates. Official figures link to their source.

  • - The family-of-five figure adds USDA's published September 2026 Thrifty monthly costs for the five age-sex groups named above, then applies USDA's instruction to subtract 5 percent for a 5- or 6-person household.
  • - BLS household spending is the 2024 Consumer Expenditure Survey average already reported on the average grocery bill page.
  • - Dinner prices on this page are approximate planning estimates.

Mistakes to avoid

  • - Using a family-of-four $50 dinner list as the food budget for six.
  • - Buying a separate meat for every person.
  • - Serving the leftover chili in the same bowl and calling it a new meal.
  • - Treating the USDA all-meals figure as the cost of these five dinners.

Easy substitutions

  • - Ground turkey can become lentils plus one pound of meat, or all beans.
  • - Chicken thighs can become drumsticks or canned chicken.
  • - Rice can become more potatoes or pasta.
  • - Cabbage can become carrots and frozen vegetables.

Planning constraints

  • - Every dinner should serve six from one pot or one pan.
  • - At least two dinners use beans as part of the protein.
  • - Name the leftover night before you shop.
  • - Keep one dinner pantry-only for a busy night.

Frequently asked questions

What is a realistic food budget for a family of 5?+

For one September 2026 example, a woman and a man ages 20-50 plus children ages 4-5, 6-8, and 9-11, USDA's Thrifty Food Plan is about $1,152 a month after the 5-person adjustment, assuming all meals and snacks are cooked at home. Households of five or more spent about $856 a month on groceries in the 2024 BLS survey, which is not the same measure. Ages, local prices, and meals eaten out move the number.

What should I make for a family of six?+

Chili over rice, a chicken and vegetable rice bake, baked potatoes with leftover chili, egg fried rice, and bean and cheese burritos. They scale in one pot and reuse the meat.

How is this different from the family-of-five plan?+

The family-of-five plan is a menu sized for five people. This page is written for six plates. The USDA example above uses a family of five so the page has a worked monthly number for a five-person household as well as a six-plate menu.
